Sage Cigarettes Magazine is a volunteer-run hybrid literary & arts magazine. We currently produce two themed literary issues a year & run a blog of pop culture, media review, & creative craft content for 10 months out of the year.

At this point in our endeavor, the project is a labor of love, devoted to creating a platform for likeminded writers, artists, & musicians. We publish & feature both established & emerging creatives & seek to discuss, examine, & promote the creative process & artists engaging with it.

Our masthead includes folks from all walks of life from the working class to academia. We are a safe space for LGBTQIA+ & other marginalized people. We are a supportive collective who contribute as we’re able to cultivate issues & regular blog content & promote the writers, artists, & musicians who contribute.

We understand that life ebbs & flows & have a policy of mental/physical health coming first. In that, our current goal is to build a robust staff of competent, flexible, likeminded creatives.

Due to the sometimes graphic nature of the submissions we receive, we ask that staff members are 18 years or older. We also ask that all staff members are able to effectively communicate in English but enjoy working with folks from around the world.

If this sounds interesting to you, please check out our current open positions. We’re excited to meet you!

Social media manager

Out of the gate, our social media manager will be responsible for coordinating weekly with the EIC to manage a calendar of promotional posts & post the agreed upon content to various social media platforms. They will also be responsible for checking & maintaining our social media accounts & responding to social media inquiries or determining if an inquiry should be passed to another editor or the EIC.

We are flexible with experience & education, as this is a volunteer position. But in our experience, social media requires a keen attention to detail, a friendly outward disposition, & clear communication skills. We are willing to train the right volunteer & are also open to someone with experience that has a different vision or things we can learn from.

In the last year or so, we have consolidated to Instagram due to a lack of resources. With a new social media manager, our initial goal will be to expand out to text-based platforms like Twitter, Bluesky, & potentially Threads. Ultimately though, we’d also like to expand to video-based platforms like TikTok & YouTube.

Associate editor

Associate editors participate in the editorial and/or layout processes of our biannual issues. Our issues are built in a fast-paced, deadline-focused few weeks & associate editors are responsible for reading, selecting, voting on, & potentially editing submissions &/or assisting in the layout & proofing process. Editors can participate in as much of the process as desired & are only required to work on one issue per year to remain on staff.

Successful associate editors communicate clearly about their availability during issue periods and respect deadlines. Experience reading for or contributing to literary magazines is appreciated but not required.

All staff members are welcome to establish a regular column. All have opportunities to publish one-off works, to vote on/read blog content depending on need, to interview or review artists & writers, and participate in themed staff spotlights in issues & on the blogs.

How to apply

We prefer to keep the process of looking for additional staff informal & conversational. Interested parties can write a letter of interest to our EIC LE Francis, lefrancis@sagecigarettes.com. Let us know where you’re coming from, where you currently stand in your creative journey, what your availability looks like, & why you’re interested in working with us.

Our EIC & Managing Editor will schedule video calls with candidates toward the end of May & into June. We typically use Discord for audio/video calls but can accommodate Zoom as well.
