Lenten Roses

Lenten Roses

by Alex Carrigan

This year for Lent,
I will lay a Lenten rose
on your doorstep every day.
I know you’ve come to forget me,
but I hope that once you have a vase
of forty thriving and wilting roses,
you will have some idea of who I was
and why you found it necessary to let
the memory of me wash away with
the ash on your
forehead.
