“Head in the Clouds” playlist

Pat Whelen/Unsplash

compiled by Sage Cigarettes Staff

This is our first stab at a themed seasonal playlist. Our early summer theme was “Head in the Clouds” & features picks from editors, artists, & contributors.

There was one pick that wasn’t available, but you can save the rest of the songs as a cohesive playlist on Spotify.

Keep an eye out for future calls if you want to plug your favorite songs or even your own music. & until then, we hope you have a dreamy summer.

“Clouds” by Børns

The song is literally about the singer having their head in the clouds and not paying attention to the world around them. The rhythm is wistful and full of summer sound.

“Drive” by Tobtok, PS1 & Georgia Meek

Maybe not for everyone, but nothing says summer to me like long drives down A1A with the windows down and house music on the radio. The funky beat that amps up after Georgia says “Don’t think about it” keeps me floating

“Cranium” by Slothrust

This song has always given me “head in the clouds” and daydreaming vibes, so I just knew it had to be one of my picks. The nonsensical lyrics and smooth rhythm feels like the opening to a chill summer but also reinforces the idea of being stuck in one’s head.

“Icarus” by STARSET

When Mel announced the summer playlist theme, this song immediately popped into my head because of the line: “Head in the clouds / Buried your feet in the ground / Telling yourself it’s the world that holds you down.”

“Head” by Jeff Rosenstock

“De Selby (Part 1)” by Hozier

The song title refers to a fictional philosopher from a Flann O’Brien novel, a bit of a lunatic with his ‘head in the clouds’. I think the acoustic guitar does a really good job of reinforcing the fanciful vibe, plus it’s just a damn good song.

“Goodie Bag” by Still Woozy

The artist’s name says enough but so do the lyrics, “Prepare to leave my body when the time it comes through”. It’s got a mellow, bubblegummy wah-wah guitar vibe that I really enjoy.

“Benny Golson” by Civilians

My second pick was going to be “Daylilly” by Movements but that was too fucking obvious & everyone knows that song. But this song/album/band are criminally underrated & it’s such a sunny, shimmery, dreamy track.

“Sun was High (So Was I)” by Best Coast

Recommended by Liz Valvano.

“Rain” by Sleep Token

This feels like an obvious choice but clouds always make me think of rain and we can’t have summer with a little rain and a little heartbreak sometimes too.
