The Homesick Mortician

The Homesick Mortician

By Peter Mladinic

She buried the man who took her
to the senior prom,
the homesick mortician.
Her voice husky like a ditch digger’s,

her fame petite, Star City’s
Mary Lois, divorced, with no children,
is all movie star charm,
but her face is a little pinched, eyes,

nose, and mouth a bit too close.
That prom night they slow danced
to Thomas Wayne’s “Romance
In the Dark,” and kissed, Star City knows.

She prepped him for the eternal prom.
Who pinned an orchid..on me,
thinks Mary Lois. He ceased to be.
They brought him home.
