I know I owe an update on my previous post, but there are still two major nights left of Popcorn Frights Film Festival. Tonight is Tony Todd Night, and tomorrow is Up All Night with Freddy – they’re playing every Nightmare on Elm Street movie in order. If you’re in the South Florida area that’s FREE, so bring your blanket to Savor Cinema (and they serve coffee).
In the meantime, I still have something fun to share with you. I follow a lot of horror creatives on social media and a collaboration post by @theblackbuffy and @softxdeath on Instagram caught my eye:
This is such a fun idea and neither of them know me personally, but what instantly came to my mind was something I’ve mentioned on the podcast more than once, but I called it “the ultimate sexual-body horror trifecta.” Obviously, Trilogy of Terror is a much cleaner and cleverer name so kudos to these two wonderbeings. So, I’m throwing my hat into the ring for funsies with my own stack!
Movie #1: Teeth (2007)
I’ve stopped asking people whether or not they’ve seen this one because they tend to visually cringe when I explain what it’s about. Dawn O’Keefe is a high school virgin (which is totally appropriate) who struggles with her burgeoning sexuality as well as a bizarre, and hopefully completely fictional, disorder down under. Trigger Warnings!
Movie #2: It Follows (2014)
Before seeing Maika Monroe in the widely anticipated Longlegs, she was in this dark warning against participating in “hookup culture”. The It that Follows is an unnamed entity passed through sexual content that marks you as its next victim. You can only get rid of it by passing it to someone else, and if that someone dies then it comes back to you in a vicious cycle. Trigger Warnings!
Movie #3: Contracted (2013)
Judge me if you will, but this movie is so unique and gnarly, and is hardly ever available on streaming. It’s one of my all-time favorites. In this chilling film, Samantha an STD from a one-night-stand but there’s no cure for this one. Instead, it causes her body to through some grotesque, undead-esque changes. Trigger Warnings!
Due to the sensitive nature of this theme, I included some links for potential trigger warnings. I don’t believe there’s any particular order to see these in, but I think the general themes and similar layers of trauma make them go really well together. If this inspires your own stack, please make sure you share it with @theblackbuffy and @softxdeath and show them some love!
Stef Nuñez (she/they) is the Editor-In-Chief of Sage Cigarettes Magazine as well as unhinged co-host of A Ghost in the Magazine & The Annegirls Podcast. M-F 9-5 she works in the South Florida high fashion scene, but at night and on the weekends she is a feral horror mami who frequents film and music festivals. OH, and she’s a poet.
