The Transcendental Constant of Circles

The Transcendental Constant of Circles

by Karla Linn Merrifield

The circumference of the Earth,
the antiquity of a sequoia’s diameter,
the time of day on grandfather’s clock face,
the value of doubloons and euros,
and the full moon’s silvered disk.

True to the sun, its eight planets, and the rings
of Saturn, in every circle is the unknowable
number— the never-ending pi, π of all life’s
mysteries, including the blissful irrationality
of marriage, of our encircling cosmic romance.
