Descendants of Brigid

Descendants of Brigid

My name is Molly McGill, I am a writer from County Derry in Ireland and an Associate Editor here at Sage Cigarettes Magazine.

I wanted to create a column that celebrated creativity and innovation in writing as an homage to the Celtic Goddess of poetic arts and crafts, Brigid. Brigid embodies the part of the creative process that rises from dreams, intuition, and the joy of creating, hence the title, Descendants of Brigid. I hope to spread awareness of writers of unique tales who portray their love for the craft in their work.

Out of all of the gods/goddesses of creativity, I chose Brigid due to her strong link to my heritage, which is very important to me, and my love of including folklore in my writing.

For my column, I will alternate between two categories: novels and novellas in the horror genre written by women; and retellings or reworkings of classic novels with a narrative focus on female or queer characters.

As Brigid is a Goddess, it seemed apparent to me that I had to give special focus to women writers. I find that women writers are underrepresented in the horror genre and wanted to shine a light on those talented authors that aren’t afraid to get ghoulish.

However, Brigid is also a Goddess of healing and I believe that the process of rewriting a classic novel through the lens of a more modern eye can be both healing for the writer to create, and the reader to experience.

I hope you get as much enjoyment from my reviews as I will have writing them.  Feel free to get in touch with your thoughts or comments.
